Tips for creating the perfect listing

Over half of people say they haven’t sold secondhand because the listing process is too time intensive. Personally, I know the struggle with wanting to get things out of your closet, but also not wanting to take time to craft the perfect listing. At Future Reference we’ve spent a lot of time figuring out what works, and wanted to share our two cents on how to create thorough listings that will sell.

Creating listings that sell:

We’ve analyzed thousands of listings, and we’ve found some common threads:

  1. A title that mirrors the product name. In luxury and branded resale, people largely search for exact items, so have the title reflect that.
  2. Detailed descriptions: Provide a clear and accurate description that reflects the item's condition. Highlight any imperfections such as stains, tears, or minor fabric snags. Bonus points if you include the materials (common question) and any fit information.
  3. Photos that represent the condition. Include detailed images like the fabric tag and flaws. Including the fabric tag helps verify authenticity, especially for higher priced items.

Some more tips on photos

  • Original merchandising photos. Listings with the original photos sell 30% faster than without. Including eye catching visuals that act as a styling reference can help the user imagine themselves in the garment the way the brand intended.
  • On-body shots. People need to guess at size and fit of the item based on the information provided, and typically the best way is to look at someone else wearing the item in comparison to your body and styling — Rent the Runway has been doing this for years. Including snapshots of the item on you, and references to how you styled it, helps engage potential buyers.
